Letter of the Day | Christianity and politics don’t mix

THE EDITOR, Sir:
The recent resistance of pro-abortionist groups to the church leaders’ stance on the abortion issue clarifies the scriptural wisdom that Christianity and politics just do not mix. ‘My kingdom is not of this world’, declared no less a person than the one we’re seeking to emulate. (John 18:36).
What kind of leadership role can an organisation expect to offer to government when its moral position can be so sneered at as hypocritical, crude and archaic? And how does a government reconcile a partnership between itself and religious bodies with such pronounced differences of position?
If the churches were really defenders of the scriptural messages they claim to advocate, they would not have aligned themselves with governments that are blatantly self-serving and dismissive of the very word that should identify Christians.
What hope does that offer to anyone whose hope is in Christianity when the identity of its followers has become so blurred and compromised for the sake of prominence and popularity?
Christ’s followers and politicians should be as different as night and day, if we’re faithfully abiding by the scriptures as the word of God. ‘Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path’ (Psalms 119:105). Unfortunately, that lamp has been used ill-advisedly for guiding decision-makers who are unappreciative of that word, one should not cast their pearls before swine while amplifying that truth that night and darkness do not mix. And yet, more seriously, is the discredit this heaps on so-called men of God who are so hungry for adoration that they would even compromise the very word in order to continue in government service, or to continue serving should their abortion opposition be overruled. All this despite scriptural admonitions against Christians serving in politics.
