When did we become so callous and heartless?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

First, I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of 17-year-old Jalisa McGowan. This heart-breaking situation has proved how fearful we are in these dreadful times. Nonetheless, the circumstances surrounding her death underscore the heartless and gut-wrenching attitude of some of our healthcare workers.

I, too, am among the number of persons who have had first-hand experiences with healthcare workers who have treated patients with little to no humanity. It is unclear if this cold and morose nature is a result of being “overworked and underpaid”. However, it is clear that human life no longer matters to some of these individuals. When did we become this callous? Nurses and doctors are not different, a number of public sector workers who are also being overworked and underpaid. Nonetheless, these other workers perform their duties.

Are you aware of the magnitude of work that a teacher does at work and at home? Human life is incomparable and the loss of a loved one at the hands of negligence is traumatic and creates an unhealed wound.

It is unfortunate that improper healthcare facilities and resources are costing the lives of many people. It is disgraceful that we do not have these basic and life-saving necessities.

We will never progress as a country without integrity, especially in this crisis.
