Call to action for Jamaica’s environmental future

Published:Tuesday | December 26, 2023 | 12:05 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Jamaica’s natural bounty faces increasing threats from pollution, unsustainable practices, and the looming impacts of climate change that has caught the attention of us as people who live in the land of wood and water. Protecting our environment is not merely a responsibility, we must accept it as an investment in our nation’s future, creating generational assets for future generations to live from and enjoy.

While the government plays a crucial role in crafting and enforcing environmental policies, the true guardians of our paradise begins and is the responsibility of us as ‘one people’. Each citizen, from the farmer tending their land to the student in the classroom, holds the power to make a difference. Therefore, I urge us to embrace active environmental stewardship and consider the following recommendations:

1. Environmental awareness should be woven into the fabric of our education system. From early-childhood education to university courses, equip Jamaicans with the knowledge and skills to understand ecological issues and make informed decisions. Foster a culture of environmental appreciation through interactive learning, community projects, and nature exploration.

2. Our choices as consumers have a profound impact on the environment. Let us move towards sustainable practices, like reducing waste, choosing local and organic products, and embracing reusable alternatives, such as food waste composting from our food markets and tables in our homes. Support businesses that prioritise environmental responsibility and hold them accountable for their practices.

3. Empower local communities to become stewards of their own environment. Encourage the formation of environmental groups in our schools and communities; support initiatives like tree-planting drives and beach clean-ups; and provide resources for sustainable farming, utilising urban compost farming innovations and waste management practices. Let us work together to protect the natural spaces that define our communities.

4. The tourism industry is a vital source of income, but it must be balanced with environmental protection. Let us promote and build upon ecotourism initiatives that have established milestones to minimise environmental impact, educate tourists about responsible behaviour, and support businesses that prioritise sustainability.

5. The people have the right to demand accountability from our government and businesses. Let us hold them responsible for upholding environmental regulations, promoting sustainable practices, and investing in renewable energy sources. Be informed, voice your concerns, and participate in decision-making processes that affect our environment.

Protecting our environment is not a burden, but an opportunity to build a brighter future. Let us act together, with passion and purpose, to safeguard the natural heritage that defines us as a people for our children.
