THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the implementation of the biometric immigration system at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

I arrived from Ft Lauderdale, Florida, and had the opportunity to experience this system first-hand, and I must say it has significantly improved the arrival and departure process.

The use of facial-recognition technology and other biometric information has streamlined border control operations, making them more efficient and secure. This system deserves commendation.

The biometric system allows for swift identification of passengers, reducing wait times at immigration checkpoints. The automated check-ins at kiosks and e-gates have made the screening process seamless and hassle-free, saving countless hours and having the potential to process more passengers and flights to the island.

By integrating biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial recognition, the system ensures accurate identification of travellers as an enhancement of our nation’s security. This not only enhances security, but also facilitates cooperation between local and overseas law-enforcement agencies. This gives the ability to generate real-time data on millions of persons entering the country by air and sea; a significant achievement. Data accessibility that will undoubtedly aid in better decision-making and resource allocation for the ultimate goal of creating a “seamlessly integrated and smooth border control operation” has been successfully met.

The collaboration between the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) and other stakeholders is commendable, as the upgrade marks the largest improvement to Jamaica’s border system in two decades. It demonstrates the Government’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technology and security.

I would like to extend my gratitude to PICA and all involved parties for their dedication to enhancing the travel experience for both Jamaican citizens and visitors. The positive impact of this system extends beyond convenience — it contributes to Jamaica’s reputation as a forward-thinking and efficient destination, boasting a key factor for visitors’ and our travelling community’s decisions to visit our island.
