THE EDITOR, Madam:

The alleged murder of Detective Sergeant Kevin Mayne has shocked the entire country. It is a sad situation that demonstrates the security risk that all serving police officers face. Theirs is a high-risk job, especially within the context that Jamaica is among the most violent countries in the world.

According to media reports, Detective Mayne was a hard-working, dedicated, and professional police officer who always carried out his duties with professionalism. This respected police officer previously served in Clarendon and St Andrew Central and was also stationed at the Kingston West Division. He was tragically murdered at the Half-Way Tree Police Station while taking a businessman into the police station, according to news reports. His fellow officers and his commanding officer had high praises for Detective Mayne. The majority of police officers are hard-working men and women. They must be given the respect that they deserve and are doing a commendable job.

All steps should be taken to secure and protect the lives of our police officers. Also, a special insurance should be implemented by the Government so that any police officer who dies while serving on the job, his immediate family should receive an insurance payment of J$25 million. All police officers on patrol should be provided a high- quality bulletproof vest.

Police officers should be protected, and it is imperative that advanced levels of bulletproof vests be purchased and distributed to all serving police officers as appropriate and warranted. All serving police officers with over 10 years of service should automatically be entitled to a licensed firearm from the Firearm Licensing Authority. Over to you, Minister Chang.

Sincere condolences to the family of the late Detective Sergeant Kevin Mayne.
