We have forgotten our roots, culture, beliefs

THE EDITOR, Madam:

My concerns regarding the current state of the educational structure are both valid and reflective of a broader dialogue about discipline, grooming standards, and authority within schools. It is understandable to feel frustrated when observing changes that seem to undermine traditional values and standards that were once upheld in educational institutions. We have become so Americanised that we have forgotten our roots, culture and beliefs.

The shift in policies regarding student appearance and behaviour can often be attributed to evolving societal norms and a push for inclusivity and self-expression. However, this can lead to tensions between established expectations and contemporary practices.

Many educators and administrators strive to balance the need for discipline and respect for authority with the desire to foster an environment that allows students to express their individuality, and allow boys and girls to be holistic beings.

It is important for stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and policymakers, to engage in constructive dialogue about these issues.

By sharing perspectives and experiences, it may be possible to find common ground that respects both the need for order and the importance of personal expression in a modern educational context.

Your voice in this conversation is crucial, as it highlights the need for a thoughtful approach to the challenges faced in schools today. Should we not take the necessary corrective approach that we need to, then our country does not have a promising future.

The proverbs says, ‘A nuh one day dawg have heartbun’. Aren’t we seeing the repercussion in the many school fights? Aren’t we seeing the verbal and physical abuse of our teachers? Aren’t we seeing the gross disregard for discipline? As a parent and concerned citizen, I am voicing my opinion with an expectancy that we’ll come together as a people and defend a change in the emerging, new educational policies implemented by our autocratic government.
