Nuclear energy may not be a good idea
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing with reference to the news article ‘Jamaica signs MOU with Canadian firms for nuclear energy’ published in The Gleaner on October 24. It is quite apparent that the government of Jamaica hasn’t taken into account the following facts when it signed a MOU with Canada concerning nuclear energy.
1. Jamaica records at least 200 earthquakes annually.
2. The Chernobyl exclusion zone is one of the biggest in the world and is still radioactive after 38 years of the nuclear disaster there.
3. After the tsunami of 2011, the Fukushima plant in Japan went into meltdown and hasn’t been restarted.
It is important that before any work begins on a nuclear power plant, facts are shared with the citizens about the pros and cons and safety of nuclear energy. Let the people decide through a referendum if they want a nuclear power plant.
