More needs to be done to address mental health issues

THE EDITOR, Madam:

It is a well-known fact that many Jamaicans suffer from varying degrees of mental illness. However, due to our cultural norms, the issue of mental health is often not taken seriously. If we examine our social norms and practices, we realise that we lack a proper system to address mental illnesses, which can include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and schizophrenia.

Mental illness is often accompanied by discrimination and stigma, leading many individuals to be afraid to seek help, for fear of being perceived as lesser than others. Further, culturally, we tend to label those suffering from mental illnesses as ‘mad people’ or ‘Bellevue patients’, which only adds to their isolation.

There are several ways this can be fixed:

1. Jamaica has made strides in addressing mental health issues, but much more needs to be done to educate people. It is essential to recognise that we are all in this together.

2. There is a need for a clear policy regarding mental health crises and how to manage them. We require a system for the early detection and treatment of mental health issues.

3. Affordable and accessible psychiatric treatment is necessary, as many people find it too expensive to seek help. Consequently, they may try to cope with their issues alone, which is detrimental.

4. Many people need someone to talk to during their lowest moments. A simple phone call can be the difference between life and death. Establishing a free mental health hotline, accessible from any network across the island, would be invaluable.

Mental health needs to be taken seriously. We can foster a culture of inclusion by addressing the various issues surrounding mental illness and providing support. Many people suffer in silence and are hesitant to seek help due to fear of judgement. It’s important to remember that it is okay not to be okay; seeking help is a sign of strength.
