Letter of the Day | Selfish drivers putting others at risk

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Earlier this week I was driving on Vineyard leg of the toll road during a heavy downpour, which drastically reduced visibility and making conditions hazardous for even the most experienced drivers. Amid these challenges, multiple vehicular collisions occurred – not solely because of the weather but because of selfish and reckless behaviours on the road.

For the first time in nearly a decade of driving, I had to pull over – twice – to wait until visibility improved. It was a decision made with safety in mind. However, as I cautiously resumed driving, I observed numerous drivers speeding through the rain, overtaking recklessly, and failing to adapt to the dangerous conditions.

Too often, we are quick to blame deplorable road conditions for accidents, and while there is truth to the poor state of our infrastructure, we must also take a hard look in the mirror. How many of these collisions could have been avoided if drivers exercised patience, caution, and consideration for others? A pothole or poor drainage might complicate a situation, but it is selfishness and recklessness that often turn dangerous conditions into deadly ones.

Selfish driving is more than just an inconvenience; it is a direct threat to life and safety. In adverse weather, when roads are slippery and visibility is limited, the stakes are even higher. Refusing to adjust your speed, maintain safe distances, or acknowledge the risks doesn’t just endanger you – it endangers everyone sharing the road.

We must remember that road safety is a shared responsibility. It’s not just about demanding better roads or improved systems; it’s about holding ourselves accountable for our actions behind the wheel. Simple choices, such as slowing down, using hazard lights, and pulling over when conditions worsen, can save lives.

A moment of impatience or carelessness can have lifelong consequences for someone else. The road is not yours alone; it is a shared space, and we all have a duty to ensure it is as safe as possible.

We should advocate for better roads and infrastructure, but we must also recognise our role in making the roads safer. The next time you’re tempted to rush or disregard conditions, think about the lives at stake.
