Letter of the Day | Jamaica 2024: Eternal Father, bless our land
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As the curtain closes on 2024, we reflect on a year that has tested our resilience, deepened our unity, and reminded us of God’s unfailing hand upon our nation. In times of both triumph and trial, we have seen the fulfilment of the words of our national anthem: “Eternal Father, bless our land, guard us with Thy mighty hand.” Truly, God has been faithful to Jamaica.
Last year, our island has witnessed His blessings in abundance. Our athletes once again brought glory to the black, green, and gold, showcasing the talent and discipline that God has poured into our people. From the classrooms to the farms, from innovation hubs to the global stage, Jamaicans have excelled, demonstrating that with God, all things are possible.
In the face of challenges, we have been strengthened by His grace. Our communities rallied to support one another, our healthcare workers persevered with courage, and our youth continued to embody the hope and promise of a brighter tomorrow.
God’s providence has also been evident in our global advocacy. Jamaica stood firm as a voice for climate justice, reminding the world of the responsibility to steward His creation with care and respect.
Yet, 2024 was not without its tests. Rising costs, natural disasters, and societal pressures have stretched us. But as our anthem reminds us, “Strengthen us the weak to cherish, give us vision lest we perish.” Through these challenges, we have found strength in God’s faithfulness, drawing on the power of prayer and the unity of our people.
In our struggles, God has been our refuge and fortress. He has answered the cries of His people, providing the vision and endurance we needed to rise above every storm.
STEPPING BOLDLY INTO 2025
As we prepare for 2025, let us anchor our hearts in the closing words of our anthem: “Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love.” This land is a gift from God, and each of us is called to play a role in its care and progress.
- To our youth, keep striving for excellence, trusting in God’s guidance to fulfil your dreams.
- To our leaders, lead with humility, seeking divine wisdom in every decision.
- To every Jamaican, let us embrace the spirit of love, unity, and faith, knowing that with God at the centre, no obstacle is insurmountable.
A Prayer for the New Year
As we step into the future, let us pray together as a nation:
“Eternal Father, bless our land,
Guard us with Thy mighty hand.
Keep us free from evil powers,
Be our light through countless hours.”
May 2025 be a year of renewal, growth, and peace, as we continue to walk in God’s grace and favour.
Walk good, Jamaica. Let us stride forward with faith, courage, and love, for our best days are still ahead.
