When Newton Nelson snapped a picture with his 77-year-old mother Gerline, they never imagined that their story would capture the hearts of many and win The Gleaner's Celebrate Your Mom competition.

Outside of raising a great son, Gerline has to her name the distinction of being a 72 -time champion in track and street events.

What’s even more touching is that this committed marathon-runner has her 39-year-old son whom is her biggest supporter running alongside her.

Growing up with Gerline, Newton knew that being active and health- conscious was important. As a result, he got engaged in sporting events which came naturally to him.

Newton’s love for his mother and her dedication to living a healthy lifestyle, persuaded him to snap a ‘selfie’ with her after one of their many 5K runs.

That memorable moment won them the prize of a weekend getaway at Royalton Negril Resort, where they indulged in yoga, wellness programmes and entertainment at the recent Tmrw. Tday Culture Festival.

The weekend experience was fun for the duo, and Gerline continues to be active and participates in marathons and walks across the island. For her, age doesn’t matter as long as you “put God first and remain consistent in fitness and health,” she said.
