Last Saturday, in the district of Welcome in Hanover, yams of all description and taste, namely, Mozella, yellow, negro and renta, were prepared and paired with curried chicken, ackee and salt fish, steamed and roasted fish, accompanied by red peas soup. The cool mountain breeze, enhanced by the view of the Montego Bay coastline, proved the perfect backdrop for a group of friends to enjoy an afternoon soiree. Hosted by birthday boy, farmer and businessman Denville ‘Fuzzy’ Reid, he was able to pull out friends such as Dr Horace Fletcher, retired University of the West Indies, Mona professor, who used the opportunity to introduce several of his big-city colleagues to country life. Yam digging was the order of the day, and Reid’s gift to the eyes was a 190lb Mozella yam, which broke last year’s record of 140lb.
