Dream House | A modern dream is almost a reality
Majority of Jamaicans of whatever age, financial position, or station in life, whether buying or building, intuitively have a preference for the traditional characteristics of architecture as it relates to their homes.
That decorative style exudes a sense of peace, familiarity, and constancy, bonding with the past. In short, it makes them feel the warmth of ‘home’.
But there are some Jamaicans, and that number is growing, who have exuberantly accepted the modern style for their dwellings.
It expresses simplicity and excitement in its geometrical forms, devoid of ornamentation; inspired by the future.
This monumental beachfront masterpiece of modernistic taste has respectfully rebelled against and rejected the design philosophy of traditional architecture. It is only a few months away from completion, as it patiently anticipates sharing its Neptunian space with those who will eventually be united in its thrilling embrace.
What a mystical site to behold! With the precipitous hills adding an impressive backdrop to the front, and the rhythmic movement of waves gently massaging its rear; there is definitely a secret love affair flowing between the unfinished house and the body of aquamarine water. It’s so obvious.
The unadorned design exploits the epic natural surroundings, with its horizontal lines displaying no projecting roof – it’s all concrete slab. An overgenerous use of glazing (glass) for openings throughout floods the interior with sea views and natural light. The towering 22-foot, two-floor height living area (overlooked by an indoor balcony) complements the unprecedented giant-sized 10-foot high, eight-foot wide front door! Oh my gosh!
We hungrily await the outfitting of the electronically advanced kitchen in the service of its dining area, along with its island eating counter.
Four deluxe bedrooms rest easy on the eyes (with their balconies), communing with the outside.
Their planned ensuite bathrooms incorporate both a shower and a soaking tub each. A self-contained two-bedroom section (with its own entry) comprises the staff quarters. The laundry room follows.
Finishing details of this functional 8,500-square-foot structure, on almost half an acre, will have porcelain floor tiles, built-in shelving units, and a soft colour palette.
The huge covered terrace navigates off the interior, sailing out to the infinity swimming pool and wet bar, almost on the water.
Environmental psychologists, neurologists, and scientists have long measured the beneficial effects of natural settings like this on the human psyche. Address: Bengal, Discovery Bay, St Ann.
This commanding house, where it sits, is going to be a winner!
