How many times have we heard the saying, ‘The body achieves what the mind believes’? Well, growing up, a chubby Rohan Francis told his friend that he would one day become a personal trainer. A man of both vision and passion, he now goes by the name ‘Frano Fitness’, enjoying the fruits of his labour while transforming lives through the 80/20 wellness rule.

“The mission started with me. Bringing that change in me was the first thing. Now, I’m here to show that anything is possible once you set your mind to it. And it’s all about making that lifestyle change,” Francis told The Gleaner, adding, “Nutrition is important. Consuming the right foods amounts to 80 per cent of the journey, while exercise is 20 per cent. It is imperative that we strike that balance.”

Francis often played sports for his school, but he never had the image that went along with that athleticism. As a fan of the gym, he saw his passion taking him further than he could have imagined, competing with the Jamaica BodyBuilding and Fitness Association (JABBFA). “I went to the gym for that self-change and self-motivation. And from there, I actually took myself, without a trainer or anything like that, to compete at a national show with JABBFA,” he said.

The young athlete placed fifth in 2017, putting him on an exhilarating healthy track.

Francis’ days start churning from as early as 4:30 a.m., training overseas clients online. By 5:30 a.m., he is at the gym for the early-morning clients. At 11 a.m. to 12 noon he has midday clients, and then from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. he trains his evening clients.

“I’m always working, but it never feels like a day of work because it’s always a passion. I try to squeeze in my own workout at 5:30-6:30 a.m. But I am at a stage right now where I am getting in that hour and staying healthy by eating as clean as possible,” he shared.

Big on variation training, he also argues that knowing the basics is equally as important. What variation does, he highlights, is it helps to engage your muscles and keeps you on your toes. But having a solid foundation is key. “For instance, you have to know how to do a deadlift without going into the variations of a deadlift and bent-over row. Gym gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself.”

Francis started out seven years ago with one client and has now brought this personalised, direct, fun, honest, jovial, passionate and serious approach to a large clientele. For him, the love and passion of impacting people in a positive way makes the journey all worth it.

“It’s not about just coming to the gym. It’s about creating a family; creating a bond. It’s about educating the clients. Working out is more than getting a look. Once you begin that journey and remain consistent, you will get energy throughout your day. Feeding the body with the right amount of nutrients daily will only improve your physique and encourage a healthy mindset,” he added.

PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING

His job description requires both patience and understanding in getting towards your goals. “People remember me through my journey. And I can relate to others because I was once in their shoes. While I dont have the same expectation, I work with their goals. If they’re struggling with something, I ask them to write them down and have them address those shortcomings.”

With an appreciation for the changes that come with wellness, it brings him great joy to tap into that burning hunger to improve mentally and physically. “People think that fitness is a quick fit. But I believe in encouraging a lifestyle change by implementing methods that are sustainable; methods that won’t make you feel like you’re in a cage. Nutrition is so important.”

He went on to say, “Once you sign up for the gym, you’re here to improve mentally and physically. I am going to give you what is required, and results are a requirement. Frano Fitness should be reflected in every client, and that boils down to passion from all parties involved.”

To get you started on your own wellness journey, the fitness coach imparted these seven health tips:

You can make changes by setting goals. Write down the factors that are holding you back and address them little by little.

If you’re consuming more calories than you’re burning, then this journey won’t work out.

Shift from processed foods to natural foods, like ground provision, lean protein, vegetables, and you should be good.

Identify your body type and work from there. Some bodies aren’t carbohydrate-friendly. Carb intake at one sitting should amount to the palm of your hands.

Compound movements are very important for losing weight and toning. Cardio is a must. And you have to be consistent.

There is no quick fix; you have to practise healthy lifestyle methods. Give yourself time, and be patient.
