As the pulsating rhythms of soca music fill the air, the Carnival in Jamaica season ignites a spirit of celebration. Amid the excitement, it’s easy to get caught up in the fast-paced festivities, but it’s important to balance having a good time with taking care of yourself.

Shani McGraham-Shirley, the visionary behind Yahsuh Fitness Ltd, for the third consecutive year has orchestrated the Caribbean Fit Fyah Soca series. Caribbean Fit Fiyah Limited hosts mass fitness classes featuring various workout styles with a unique formula and flavour. The Fit Fiyah Soca Series is a carnival-themed fitness event focusing on igniting the spirit while promoting health and wellness. The five-week series offers 90-minute workouts divided into eight segments, featuring high-intensity moves to the latest soca and dancehall hits.

Bidding farewell to another fun Fit Fyah series, McGraham-Shirley shares 10 health and wellness tips for carnival prep.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Staying hydrated is key during the Carnival season. With all the dancing and excitement in the week leading up and Road March Sunday, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses a day, especially on the days leading up to Carnival Sunday. And on Carnival day, electrolyte powder may be a good thing to carry with you as a road essential.

2. Balanced nutrition is crucial

Carnival indulgences abound, but maintaining a balanced diet is vital for sustained energy levels. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your meals to keep your energy levels up in the lead up to carnival. And don’t play hero – be sure to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on carnival day.

3. Prioritise sleep

With all the excitement surrounding carnival events, it’s tempting to sacrifice sleep. However, ample rest is essential for overall well-being and endurance for all the Carnival festivities. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to recharge your body.

4. Incorporate regular exercise

Engaging in regular exercise not only helps you stay in shape but also boosts your mood and energy levels, setting you up to have more stamina and more fun on the road.

5. Pace yourself

Alcohol is often part of carnival celebrations for many, but excessive drinking can take a toll on your health. Practise mindful drinking by setting limits and alternating alcoholic beverages with water to stay hydrated, especially on Carnival Sunday.

6. Protect your skin

Spending long hours in the sun during the festivities can lead to sunburn and dehydration. Remember to apply sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, wear protective clothing such as stockings, visors, sunglasses, and seek shade when possible to avoid sun damage.

7. Listen to your body

Pay attention to how your body feels during the Carnival season. If you’re feeling fatigued or experiencing any discomfort, take breaks as needed and don’t push yourself.

8. Support is key

Surround yourself with supportive friends and family who also prioritise health and wellness. Having a support system can help keep you motivated and accountable during carnival preparations.

9. Stress management

Carnival season can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. Take time to unwind and de-stress with activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to maintain a sense of balance.

10. Celebrate responsibly

Above all, remember to celebrate responsibly. Enjoy the festivities, music, and dancing, but do so in a way that respects your body and overall well-being.
