After 61 long years, this dream house now comes from the shadows of seclusion into the glare of publicity, revealing its architectural and interior design characteristics.

It was erected in 1963 by a New York banker who ultimately succumbed to a heart attack. It would later be acquired in 1980 by a then 32-year-old Canadian seafarer, who owned a former Canadian Navy air-sea rescue boat, which he used to service oil companies as far as Alaska; as well as being a developer of marinas. It would be his Jamaican cook on board, who consistently lauded Jamaica, so much so, that the gentleman would become infatuated with the island, purchasing the country estate as his main house, in the far-removed section of Unity Hall, St James.

A long, private driveway takes you to the stately, colonial-style mansion, glorified with an entrance garden courtyard, leading to the foyer (entrance area). Observe the cut-stone walls, sash windows and shutters, French doors, and the distinguishing, double fireplace chimneys dominating the roofline.

Leave all worries at the doorstep as you enter the home with its walnut-stained floor boards; mahogany wood-crafted staircase; tray ceilings; and decorative mouldings elaborately detailing all over. This timeless house makes an unabashed statement of elegance, what with plush furnishings; the finest fabrics for drapery of windows; and choice, lavish, decorative accessories. Pastel wall colours create a mood with their yellow, green, pink and lavender hues.

Magnificent views of the sea and Montego Bay are to be had from seven tastefully coordinated bedrooms and their bathrooms (inclusive of separate walk-in showers and dressing rooms). This includes also a study with wood panelling; a courtly, formal living room; and an eight-sided dining room – all mostly opening out to dining/relaxation covered terraces and balconies. A chef’s kitchen serves the dining area most tastefully. There is also a fully equipped gym.

Are we torn between taking pleasure and comfort on the inside, or basking and playing on the outside, with its swimming pool (with spilling fountain) and wet bar, badminton court, tennis court, nine-hole golf putting green, and a half basketball court? All this within private, impeccably landscaped, flowering palm tree gardens and a wooded grotto.

The owner, now 76 years old, is still in awe from the first day he laid eyes on the house. It has weathered well with him.
