In this March 12 photo the Kingston Wharves is blanketed in a haze of smoke from the Riverton City dump, seen from the hillside community of Plantation Heights in St Andrew.

The Education Ministry says eight schools in the vicinity of the Riverton City dump in Kingston had to send home students because of smoke from the week-old fire.

Principal of the Duhaney Park Primary, Lydia Richards says a teacher and a student fainted this morning.

The ministry says up to 10 o'clock this morning, only those eight schools were closed.

They are the Dupont, Duhaney Park, George Headley and the Portsmouth primary schools.

Pembroke Hall, the Hydel Group of schools and the Coburn Gardens Primary & Junior High suspended classes.

Waterford High School in St Catherine remains closed.
