The RenWeb School Management System (SMS), utilised by a number of local schools, has been revolutionising administrative processes at these institutions.

During last week's Zed Makeyla Technology Awards ceremony to recognise those schools that have implemented the system, principals explained the benefits of having an SMS.

Albert Corcho, principal of Calabar High, said: "The system is so good that no longer do I have to call a secretary to bring me a student's file. I just go on the system and I am able to bring up all the information I need."

He went on to say that embracing technology in the management of his school has cut his operating costs significantly.

"We need to find a way to get this system in every single school because it cuts your costs in half. No longer am I paying to print reports. I can now put them online and send them out by email," he added.

Arlene Morgan, vice-principal at Wolmer's Girls' School, one of the early adopters of RenWeb, said, "We were most pleased when RenWeb was introduced to us. It's more than just a school-management system, because we have used it in every aspect of our school."

Julian Robinson, state minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (STEM), who delivered the keynote address during the ceremony, affirmed the Government's support for the use of technology in schools.

The introduction of the RenWeb SMS in Jamaica was pioneered by Zed Jamaica Limited.

RenWeb provides a web interface for many common tasks done by schools. Features of the system include student information management, access to grades online, student attendance, and student scheduling.
