Low-income housing solutions coming

The Government is planning to use money from the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the PetroCaribe Fund to build low-income housing for Jamaicans over the next three years.

Speaking in the sectoral debate in parliament this afternoon, minister without portfolio in the housing ministry, Dr. Morais Guy, said the housing deficit for low and lower middle income earners is still significantly large.

He said discussions were held between his ministry and the NHT to develop a specific policy to increase the delivery of low income housing solutions within the short to medium term.

According to Guy, lands have been identified on which 5,062 lots are to be carved out.

Guy said it is estimated that the project will cost $12.91 billion.

According to the minister, the NHT will provide $3.89 billion of that amount with the rest to be taken from other sources, such as the PetroCaribe Fund.
