800 persons sign up for pre-paid eletricity
Eight-hundred persons have so far converted to the pre-paid electricity service being offered by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).
The service became public less than a month ago following its official launch on April 20.
Head of Marketing and Project Manager for Pay-as-you-Go, Tishan Lee, says customers have been responding well to the new service.
The pay-as-you-go service is being offered in Kingston, St Andrew and St Catherine.
Lee says the pilot, which targets 2,000 customers, is expected to last until the end of the year.
However, she says this deadline may be brought forward given the positive response to the service.
According to her, JPS customers from outside the pilot areas have been requesting to sign up for the pre-paid service.
Lee says there are plans to roll out the pay-as-you-go service to other parts of the island, subject to discussions and approval by the Office of Utilities Regulations.
According to her, customers on pre-paid have seen savings of 35 per cent.
There is no charge to customers to convert to pre-paid and customers who want to go back to post-paid can do so for free if the application is made within 12 months.
Meanwhile, Lee says measures are in place to help customers manage their pre-paid electricity.
