Shernet Haughton appears before PNP integrity body, ruling in two weeks

The People’s National Party (PNP) says it’s pushing to have a decision from its executive committee on the status of embattled member and councillor, Shernet Haughton within two weeks.

The PNP has, on several occasions, said it is moving to settle the issue but the process has been repeatedly delayed.

PNP General Secretary Paul Burke told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this afternoon that Haughton finally appeared before the party’s Integrity Commission last week.

He says the commission will be submitting its report to the PNP executive committee to make its recommendation in two weeks.

Meanwhile, Burke has sought to explain why the process is yet to be completed two months after Haughton was cited.

He says Haughton had exams on previous dates set by the party for her to appear before the commission:

In March, the Office of the Contractor General released a report accusing Haughton of nepotism in the award of contracts during her 2012-2014 tenure as Mayor of Lucea in Hanover.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has since ruled against criminal charges but said Haughton should be sanctioned for violating principles of good governance.
