Christian-Based Curriculum Makes the Difference at Covenant

The principal at Covenant Christian Academy is convinced that the Christian-based education offered at the school has contributed to the excellent passes attained by her students.

"What separates us is the spirit of the school - we are like a family, we look out for each other and the fact that we are grounded in the word of God ... . We are focused on how the word of God would want us to perform, and our students perform excellently because God is a God of excellence," she said.

She also pointed to the infusion of the A Becka Book curriculum with that provided by the Ministry of Education. The A Becka Book curriculum is used by Christian schools and home-schooling families worldwide.

"The A Becka Book curriculum has been tested and tried and we have been using it since our inception 23 years ago. We use it with the curriculum from the ministry and it is very effective in building the academic skills while imparting Christian principles," she added.

Intense preparation

Her assertions were backed up by head boy Timothy Hay, who earned 100 per cent in all but one of the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) subjects, falling one short of the perfect score in social studies.

"I had to work very assiduously and it was a lot of intense preparation, but that was guided by the fact that the teachers instilled certain principles in us and we learn about God, and I don't know if many other schools take the time to teach the children about God ... that helped me a lot because although I was anxious going into the exam I had confidence in God," he said.

Top GSAT girl at the school Amanda Whittle also said that the Christian-based environment contributed to her performance.

"We are brothers and sisters. We go over to each others' house and study, we quiz each other before the exam and make sure that everybody understands," she said.
