Sagicor Grande Market to assist Wortley Home

On Monday, June 29, a section of The Wortley Home for Girls was completely destroyed by fire.

The dormitory section of the home was gutted, forcing the State to find alternate housing for the 19 girls at the institution. To do its part to get the home back to full operation, corporate giant Sagicor is lending a hand.

Through its Grande Market charity event, the company has announced The Wortley Home for Girls as the 2015 charity. Sagicor team members will be selling items and displaying their unique talents. Not only will the event showcase products, services and talents of the employees, it will raise public awareness to heighten support for the home, in light of the recent fire.

The Grande Market is scheduled for Sunday, July 26 at Devon House, starting at 10 a.m. Items on sale will include clothing, accessories, art and craft and household supplies. In addition to the sales, the public can meet the Mister and Miss Sagicor contestants and enjoy live entertainment. There will be a Kidz Korner for the young ones, making it a family affair.

The Wortley Home was founded in 1918 by the Rev Canon Wortley, then rector of St Andrew Parish Church, and his wife, Bertha. The home is located at 'Maurice Hill', in Constant Spring, St Andrew. Originally, it provided placements for orphans or children whose parents were indigent. Noted for its annual carol-singing recitals at Christmas, the home now accepts any needy girl, regardless of socio-economic or religious background. It has accommodation for 25 residents.
