Cops on corruption charges offered bail

Two policemen were today offered bail when they appeared in court on separate corruption-related charges.

Constable Owen McLeary was offered bail in the sum of $850,000 following an application by his attorney, Dwight Reece.

He’s to return to court on December 9 when he’s expected to stand trial.

It is alleged that in March 2012, the cop seized a motorbike and later asked the owner to pay him $400,000 for its release.

The owner reportedly said he had only $100,000, which he paid over that same month at the Organised Crime Investigation Division.

However, the bike was not released and the owner reported the matter.

Following a probe, the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that McLeary be charged.

In the other case Corporal Ralph Thompson, was offered bail in the sum of 500,000.

He's to return to court on September 18.

It is alleged that in November 2012, he solicited money from a motorist to prevent his vehicle from being placed on a wrecker.

The motorist reportedly paid the cop $10,000 but later filed a report.

The police told the cop to return the money, which he reportedly did.

The matter was later filed to the DPP, who ruled that the cop be charged.
