Police carrying out spot checks on Constant Spring Road close to the intersection with Dunrobin in St Andrew are reporting the seizure of numerous offensive weapons and several pounds of ganja from people travelling to the National Arena for the People's National Party's (PNP's) 77th annual conference.

Several persons were off-loaded from their vehicles and searched.

Though cooperative, some persons could be heard questioning if the police were Labourites.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Noel Daley labelled the operation, which started from approximately 8 a.m., as a routine one but said it has taken on added significance given the number of persons travelling to the conference.

"We want to ensure that the members have a safe conference," said Daley.

Daley, however, said no arrest was made, as the various contrabands were not found in the possession of individuals.

"These people come of the bus and we search the bus and find them on the bus, so we cannot pinpoint them to anyone," Daley said.
