Really distressing ... West Kingston Commission chairman weighs in on spiralling murder toll

Chairman of the West Kingston Commission of Enquiry Sir David Simmons has weighed in on Jamaica's spiralling murder toll, calling it "really distressing".
His comment came after Lieutenant Colonel Jamie O'Gilvie testified that the 2010 police-military operations in Tivoli Gardens had helped to reduce the murder tally at the time.
Simmons indicated that he saw media reports last evening indicating that the number of murders reported this year has surpassed the number reported for the corresponding period last year.
"This is a never ending spiral, it has to stop. Jamaica has to pull back from this," he suggested.
As at Monday, Jamaica's murder toll so far this year was at 1,004 — an increase of 26 when compared with the similar period last year.
