Sargassum: Scientists say smelly seaweed may be around for a while

NEPA says scientists believe the sargassum will be around for a long time due to climate change and the warming of the oceans.

NEPA says the presence of nutrients from pollutants in the water provides food and a healthy environment for the seaweed to flourish.

As a result, director of environment management at NEPA Anthony McKenzie is warning that there is likely to be significant accumulation in some areas.

McKenzie also warned that there may be instances where the sargassum gets overwhelming and may require a national response.
