Tourists walk by sargassum on a beach. NEPA says the presence of nutrients from pollutants in the water provides food and a healthy environment for the seaweed to flourish.

NEPA says scientists believe the sargassum will be around for a long time due to climate change and the warming of the oceans.

NEPA says the presence of nutrients from pollutants in the water provides food and a healthy environment for the seaweed to flourish.

McKenzie also warned that there may be instances where the sargassum gets overwhelming and may require a national response.
