Get involved at your child's school

Below is a statement from Everton Hannam, president of the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ).

November is designated as Parent, Youth, and Local and Community Development Month. Under the theme, 'Parents Take the Time ... Be Involved', I use this opportunity to reach out to all parents to get involved in the lives of their child, children or ward; get involved without invading their personal space; get involved to ensure that they are first in work, first in study, first in discipline.

Notwithstanding the many challenges that parents continue to face at this time, I am comforted by the resilience, commitment and firm dedication being displayed by many parents as you make every effort to provide for your children. The NPTAJ salutes you.

Equally, I call upon those parents who are still not involved to do so now. Parent-teacher associations (PTA) provide the forum where guidance, training and support can be offered. Our close partnership with other agencies allows for the sharing and collaboration which will lead to better parenting. Let me also reach out to and recognise our school administrators, principals, teachers, guidance counsellors, deans of discipline, board chairs who continue to support the activities of the PTA. We encourage others to support, not suppress, the PTA in your institutions.

PTAs are, without apology, equal stakeholders in the education transformation process, not just fundraisers for schools. Parent Month activities will be many and varied as you recognise your outstanding parents.

Get involved in the many activities being held at your child/children/ward's school. These activities will culminate with the eighth annual parent conference of the NPTAJ to be held at Jamaica College on the 28th November 2015.

I look forward to seeing as many parents and other stakeholders at this stellar event for parents. Spread the word: PTA, up, up, up! May God continue to bless and guide all parents.
