NWC spends US$7 million to buy new metres, valves

The National Water Commission (NWC) is to acquire 50,000 new water metres and 25,000 valves for more than US$7 million as it seeks to cut costs and improve service.
NWC President, Mark Barnett, says the metres have a life span of 15 years, a tamper-resistant mechanism, an easy-to-read digital display and more accurately measure the water used.
According to Barnett, the new water meters are among a new generation of metering instruments and technology that utility companies around the world are using to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
He was speaking at the contract signing this morning.
Water Minister Robert Pickersgill, noted that the new meters are an essential part of the process of making the NWC efficient.
It could reduce the cause of disputes and disagreements with NWC customers as well as ensure that the agency is able to accurately measure and collect for all the water it supplies.
The gathering was told that a shipment of meters was already enroute to Jamaica with more scheduled to be shipped before the end of the year.
