Police seize 3,300 pounds of ganja, US$83,000 in separate cases

The Narcotics Police say they will soon lay charges in connection with Wednesday's massive ganja and currency seizures.
According to the police some 3,304 pounds of ganja and US$83,900 were seized in two separate incidents in Kingston and St. Catherine.
In the first incident about 10:30 a.m., a 42-year-old Venezuelan who arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport was about to check in for a flight to Curacao when he was stopped after his suitcase was searched and US$83,900 found hidden in several items including shampoo bottles.
He was arrested.
Hours later, the police were on an operation in Independence City, Portmore, St. Catherine where a Toyota Hiace bus was searched.
The police say they found several knitted bags in the vehicle with 656 parcels of ganja weighing 3,304 pounds.
The drugs had a street value of $11.6 million.
One man was taken into custody in connection with the find.
The police say he and the other man are expected to be charged soon.
"We are pleased with these recent set of seizures; this indicates how determined our police officers are in the fight against criminal activities," said SSP Calvin Small, head of the Narcotics Division.
"No stone will be left unturned until we rid our country of this monster called crime," he added.
