New date for Mario Deane attackers

The three inmates facing criminal charges in relation to last year's beating death of Mario Deane, who was assaulted while in police custody, had their cases deferred until December 9 when they appeared in both the St James Circuit Court and the St James Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
After first appearing in the Resident Magistrate's Court, the three accused men, Marvin Orr, Adrian Morgan and Damion Cargill, were taken to Circuit Court and later back to the RM Court. They were subsequently remanded until their next hearing.
Transfer
The moving from one court to the other was to facilitate the execution of a nolle prosequi ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which was made to allow the transfer of several of the charges against the men from the Resident Magistrate's Court.
When they appeared in the Circuit Court before High Court Justice Courtney Daye, the December 9 date was given for the matter to be mentioned. This was due to the absence of some of the defence attorneys representing the men.
"This case will be mentioned next week, on December 9. All the men are remanded until then," said Daye, after being informed by Orr's lawyer Stacy-Ann Young that attorney Franklin Haliburton, who represents Cargill, was before another court.
Cargill, Orr and Morgan are charged in relation to Deane's death on August 6, 2014, following a beating he sustained three days earlier when all four were locked up at the Barnett Street Police Station.
Orr and Morgan were arrested and charged following Deane's death, while Cargill was charged in April this year.
In addition to the three inmates, several police personnel are also facing criminal and other charges arising from the incident, which captured national attention for several months.
