Supporters of North East St Elizabeth Member of Parliament, Raymond Pryce, are apologising to him after he was forced to resign as deputy general secretary of the People’s National Party (PNP).

Pryce announced his resignation in a letter to PNP president, Portia Simpson Miller, yesterday in which he said the current situation has become untenable.

His resignation coincided with calls by some of the party’s officers that he be sanctioned after scores of his supporters descended on the PNP headquarters on Monday demanding that Pryce be reinstated as the party’s candidate for the next election.

A release from the PNP said senior party figures believe that some of Pryce's supporters have behaved disgracefully, disrespectfully and improperly.

This morning, one of Pryce’s supporters, Daphne Holmes, said the supporters were sorry their actions have cost their MP.

Holmes, who is a former Black River Mayor, had taken the PNP to court and secured an injunction against the holding of a selection exercise in the North East St Elizabeth constituency.

But she says she only went that route because of the unresponsiveness of the PNP’s general secretary, Paul Burke.

Holmes has also apologised to Party President, Portia Simpson Miller, for unfavourable comments made about her by protesting Pryce supporters.

Evon Redman was eventually selected to represent the PNP in the constituency in the next election, after the court action was discontinued.

But Holmes is predicting that at least three quarters of all Comrades in the constituency will not vote based on the party’s decision to continue with Redman.
