Dental surgeon with Jamaican heritage bringing latest in dental implants to Jamaica

The world's largest dental implant manufacturer, Straumann, will introduce its first ceramic implant at the International Academy of Ceramic Implantology (IAOCI) conference in Montego Bay.
The event, which has attracted between 100 and 150 dentists from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, takes place at the Hilton Rose Hall resort, February 3-6.
Straumann shares the spotlight with Swiss counterpart Zirkolith. Both companies will host two workshops, says dental surgeon Dr Sammy Noumbissi, founding president of IAOCI.
Jamaica is the first country in the Caribbean to host the event, which has called the USA its home over the last four years. The IAOCI has been organising and sponsors/co-sponsors programmes in metal-free ceramic implantology around the world.
Relatively new to the Americas, ceramic implants have had 17 successful years in Europe and seven in the USA, says Dr Noumbissi.
The Howard University graduate, whose mother is Jamaican, told The Gleaner one of the main goal of the conference is to introduce metal-free implants to dentists here regardless of their speciality or area of practice.
Two former Jamaica Dental Association presidents are among the participants, while Montego Bay-based dental surgeon Dr Christopher Ogunsalu will exhibit at the congress.
Fifteen speakers from Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Spain and Italy are booked to delve into topics such as the use of Protein Rich Fibrin to improve osseointegration of dental implants, the science behind ceramic implants, and adhesion to reconstruction materials, technical and clinical protocols.
