Buggery law issue placed on back burner despite international pressure

The People's National Party (PNP) Administration has signalled that there will be no vote on the buggery law in Parliament any time soon.

Finance and planning minister, Dr Peter Phillips says before any vote on the matter, there would need to be extensive public debate on the issue. 

He says the country will not bow to international pressure to repeal the law.

Phillips was responding to a question last night from a member of the audience at a face-to-face forum put on by the Peoples National Party (PNP) in Cedar Grove East Central St Catherine.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller had hinted during the 2011 election cycle that a People's National Party Government would review Jamaica's buggery law.

However, despite pressure from lobby groups locally and internationally, the issue has been placed on the back burner.
