Farm roads to be upgraded, government signs multimillion-dollar contracts

Twenty-two farm roads in 10 parishes are to upgraded in the coming months.
The roads are to be rehabilitated under phase two of the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Farm Road Rehabilitation Programme.
Seven contracts valuing $182 million were signed yesterday for the roadworks in Portland, St James, Hanover, St Mary, Clarendon, St Thomas, St Ann, St Catherine, Westmoreland and Trelawny.
Speaking at the contract signing Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, said through the programme, the government is providing farmers with adequate road access from their farms and to markets.
Under the first phase of the programme, $94.7 million was invested in the rehabilitation of seven roads in farming communities in Manchester, St Thomas, St Andrew, St James and St Elizabeth.
Phase three will cover roads in all parishes, except Kingston.
The government plans to spend a total of $1.2 billion repairing 41 roads across the country over the life of the programme.
