Candidates urged to desist from launching personal attacks on opponents

President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), William Mahfood, is urging candidates to desist from launching personal attacks and bad-mouthing opponents on the campaign trail.

Mahfood says these actions are divisive and do not help the political process.

He notes that Jamaica has come a long way from its history of political tension and care must be taken not to engage in any behaviour that may be seen as destructive.

Mahfood is questioning why some candidates are choosing now to raise concerns about the assets and personal property of others and did not take up the matter in Parliament or with the Integrity Commission.

The mansion of Opposition Leader and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Andrew Holness, has been a major talking point by the ruling People’s National Party.

Mahfood is of the view that the personal attacks and offensive utterances on the campaign trail are a turn off to Jamaicans.

The PSOJ president says candidates must recognise that all Jamaicans will have to come together after the elections for the benefit of national development.
