St Ann PC takes on repair of NWA roads

ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann:
With road conditions in the parish capital of St Ann's Bay being severely deteriorated, the St Ann Parish Council moved recently to effect repairs in much needed areas, despite some of these roadways falling under the ambit of the National Works Agency (NWA), which has responsibility to fix them.
Several motorists have since expressed pleasure that some streets in the town have been repaired.
"It long overdue," one motorist told Rural Xpress, in reference to repairs to
Tucker Drive, a lane that runs beside the St Ann Parish Library and links the town to the AGR Byfield Highway.
This road had remained in a deplorable condition for several years before the Council repaired it last month.
Repairs and bushing were also done to some sections of Main Street, King Street and Royes Street.
And following heavy rains recently, the Council cleared several roadways and drains, including Gully Road, leading towards Lime Hall.
"We have done the repairs because we are the local government and the citizens are taxpayers and deserve better, so we have to respond to their needs," explained Mayor of St Ann's Bay, Councillor Desmond Gilmore.
Meanwhile, sections of Main Street and other streets in St Ann's Bay remain in deplorable condition.
The repairs came even as the NWA was making plans to roll-out a multi-million dollar road repair project across 12 parishes.
These plans were announced last Wednesday and will cost $80 million.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said then, the programme will follow that which was implemented in Kingston and St Andrew in April, where $85 million was spent.
A final list of roads to be repaired is scheduled to be announced.
Efforts to get a comment from Shaw on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
