Education Ministry puts $20,000 cap on auxiliary fees

The Education Ministry has instructed schools not to ask parents to contribute more than $20,000 in auxiliary fees.

In keeping with a promise by the Andrew Holness-led administration, the government has abolished mandatory auxiliary fees.

As a result, it has increased the funding to the high schools from $2.6 billion to $5.1 billion. 

The ministry says while it has been encouraging parents to make non-obligatory contributions to schools, some administrators have been requesting exorbitant amounts.

It's why the ministry has now ordered that schools should not request more than $20,000 from parents inclusive of registration fees.
