Windalco awards scholars
Thirty-five students from several parishes across Jamaica have benefited from scholarships and grants from UC Rusal Alumina Jamaica Limited/WINDALCO.
The bursaries to the students form part of WINDALCO's annual local scholarships and grants programme. The company has invested four million dollars to assist tertiary-level students with tuition fees and other back-to-school expenses ahead of the 2016-2017 academic year.
Speaking to the recipients at the presentation ceremony on Monday August 22, Human Resources Director Glendon Johnson said the company is always pleased to invest in the educational pursuits of young people. He also encouraged the students to do well so that they too can give back to their home communities and the country at large.
GOOD INVESTMENT
"Any investment in education is a good one. Education is the most important vehicle to get you to social mobility and economic independence. We can't grow without enough intellectual capacity and that is why we invest. This is just an assistance. You have to work hard and understand what matters most to you. We expect a return on our investment. We expect you to excel, volunteer in your communities and help others," said Johnson.
Students can receive continued financial assistance from the company each year once they maintain a 3.0 grade point average. The recipients under this year's programme have been accepted into universities to study medicine, agriculture, engineering, communications, international relations, and business, among other disciplines.
