BOG WALK, St Catherine:

Fourteen-year-old Brittney Williams of Jewpen district in Bog Walk St Catherine has proven that with hard work and dedication goals can be achieved.

The St Hugh's High School third-form student achieved a distinction in Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM) at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) level this year.

In an in an interview with The Gleaner, Williams said she did not have to study hard to achieve this result. However, she noted that there were specific challenges she encountered in her preparation for the examination.

"Well I had a rough time submitting my portfolio on time, something I had to do before I sat my final paper. When it was printed, there were multiple errors, I had to change it and ensure that it was done on time for submission to the Ministry of Education," she stated.

Added Williams: "The challenge of commuting from Jewpen Hill to my high school in Kingston, took away a lot of my study time, however my main challenge was when I sat the exams, nothing I studied from the syllabus came on the examination paper, I had to improvise."

Williams explained that because of her fascination with computers from an early age, EDPM, a fairly new subject, similar to Information technology, allowed her to sit the examination confident that she would do well.

Describing herself as an advocate for people who enjoy reading and singing, Williams credited her father, Calvin, and her big sister, Calfice, for their continuous support.

"My father and my sister provide daily motivation for me, always encouraging me to work hard in school," she said.

Williams, who will matriculate to fourth form in September, plans to sit mathematics and English language at the CSEC level before she gets to fifth form, noting that she is confident that she will pass both subjects with distinctions.
