Peace Corps Brings GLOW to Jamaica

Peace Corps brought the first ever Camp Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) to Jamaica in conjunction with Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn initiative held from August 17- 20 at the Knox Community College in Cobbla, Manchester.

Twenty-three girls' ages 13-17, from across Jamaica participated in the four-day camp. Camp GLOW takes place in more than 60 countries across the world. It was started in 1995 in Romania, with strategies to empower adolescent girls by increasing their skills in leadership and opportunity, as well as encouraging community engagement as the main aim.

The programme aims to lead campers in activities centred on developing leadership skills, self-development, and increasing knowledge about respecting and caring for the environment.

"We wish to promote the belief that every camper has the ability to make a difference in her community. These objectives of Camp GLOW will be met through art, music, interaction with nature, and reflective writing," said Melissa Eckstrom, Peace Corp volunteer.

"Camp GLOW Jamaica could not have taken place without the support of our many donors, presenters and our supporting partner, Plant Jamaica. We would like to thank LASCO, Food For The Poor and Bullhead Spring Water for their generous donations," she added.

Knox College and Knox Community College, JN Foundation, Respect Jamaica, Gina and Andrew (Plant Jamaica), Adziko Simba (author), Nicola Shirley Phillips (Source Farm), and Joan Webley also assisted with the event.
