The government is looking to enact legislation that will allow Justices of the Peace (JPs) to perform duties islandwide.

That’s the word from Justice Minister Delroy Chuck who has also warned of impending legislation to decommission JPs who breach the code of conduct.

He acknowledged that there is a shortage of JPs to adequately serve the island, but gave the assurance that efforts are being made to increase the number.

The justice minister urged the custodes to help identify persons with unblemished characters and encourage them to become justices of the peace.

He also appealed to members of the clergy, teachers and other community leaders to offer themselves to serve as JPs.

Chuck was speaking at a recent installation ceremony for 35 new JPs for  the parish of St James.
