Nominations open for Gleaner's Hospitality Jamaica awards

Nominations are now open for The Gleaner's Hospitality Jamaica Awards, which will recognise organisations and an individual who have contributed significantly to improving the quality and experience of the hospitality industry.

The premier biennial event, scheduled for the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Saturday, November 19, 2016, will award Jamaica's best at what has been described as the 'Oscars' of the local hospitality sector.

"We are looking for hotels, attractions, purveyors, transportation operators and even restaurants catering to the tourist industry, that have provided exceptional customer service which enhances the visitor experience," says Hospitality Jamaica coordinator Janet Silvera.

She pointed out that these entities must comply with all applicable tourism industry standards.

"Engaging in continuous upgrading of their facilities and training of staff is among one of the most important criteria," explained Silvera.

She added that the business must be in operation for more than one year to be nominated.

Nomination closes Friday, September 30, after which the nominees are shortlisted and placed in the various categories. Persons may nominate a tourism organisation of their choice by sending a fax to 876-952-3828; writing a letter to: Editor, The Gleaner, P.O. Box 40, Kingston or email: hospitalityjamaica@gleanerjm.com.

Entries must include the nominee's full name, address and telephone number; a brief description of the specific reasons for nominating the

entity; category in which the candidate is being nominated and the name, telephone and address of the person doing the nomination.

The categories include 'Best in Jamaican Entertainment', 'Best All-inclusive' under 300 rooms and 'Best All-inclusive' over 300 rooms.

Hospitality Jamaica is also looking to award the country's 'Best European Plan' hotel, 'Best Eco/Sustainable Resort', 'Best in Cuisine', 'Best Small or Boutique' hotel, 'Best Purveyor', 'Best in Transportation', 'Best Attraction', 'Best Business or Conference hotel', and 'Best in Innovation'.

One individual will be awarded Hospitality Personality of the Year, and this selection is being done by a team of judges.

"This person must have served the industry for more than 15 years; must have made significant contribution to tourism, community development, while playing the role of a change agent," said Silvera.

Voting for Jamaica's best in the hospitality industry begins Saturday, October 1. Persons may vote online at the Jamaica-Gleaner.com, via email to hospitalityjamaica.com or fax letters to The Gleaner.
