PNP renewal slogan not relevant - Brown-Burke

Two People’s National Party (PNP) vice-presidents have dismissed calls for renewal within the 78-year-old party as cliche.

The call for renewal within the PNP was the central theme on which South East St Ann Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna campaigned for one of the four vice-president positions in the PNP.

Hanna polled just 1,570 votes in her failed campaign.

Speaking yesterday after the results of the polls were announced at the National Arena, Dr Angela Brown-Burke said this was not the time to be talking about renewal in the PNP as the party, over the years, has always been about renewal.

Noting that the delegates have chosen the persons they believe can best serve the party in the position of vice presidents, Brown-Burke said it was now time to focus on rebuilding the PNP. Noel Arscott also echoed similar views.

PNP President Portia Simpson Miller, who has come under pressure to outline a timetable for her departure, easily defeated former government minister Dr Karl Blythe to retain her position.

The public session of the conference takes place today with Simpson Miller scheduled to give the main address.
