National PTA to gov't: Partner with us to develop school bus system

The National Parent-Teachers' Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) is suggesting the government partner with parents who operate public passenger vehicles to develop a national school bus system.

The NPTAJ’s call follows yesterday’s bus shooting in Montego Bay, St James, where gunmen sprayed bullets on a bus transporting mainly school children.

Two Maldon High School students were injured and the bus driver killed.

President of the NPTAJ, Everton Hannam, says there are many parents who are public transport operators and are reliable enough to transport students safely.

The education ministry says it has dispatched trauma teams to schools to assist parents and teachers who have been affected.

Transport Minister Mike Henry has condemned the attack describing it as a brazen and vicious act of intimidation that speaks to an increasing degree of callousness among Jamaicans.
