Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton is to launch an investigation into the deaths of seven newborns at the country's chief maternity hospital, the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.
The Gleaner understands that the babies died of sepsis upon birth.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Winston De La Haye confirmed the deaths. Following a temporary closure of the labour ward and an investigation, he said the infection was caused by an organism from the vaginas of the mothers.
