#LocalGovtElection: ‘Too much handout’ in Sav division

"Too much handout and no development," were the words of voter Pete Stewart of Savanna la Mar in Westmoreland, who is hoping for a change of local government representation after years of rule under the People's National Party (PNP).

Stewart outlined that he gladly voted for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), because, despite more than 30 years of being repeatedly voted into power, the PNP has done little to lift "Sav from out the gutters".

He highlighted poor roads and drainage as well as lack of infrastructure among the main issues that continue to escalate under the PNP rule.

"In Sav, if rain drizzle you can't walk on the sidewalk, you have to walk in the road. In the communities, is the same thing," he said.

Stewart further noted brain drain as another problem in the town because there is lack of opportunities for the educated, more so the young people who are moving to cities like Montego Bay, St James to find jobs.

"I know people who leave teachers college and have to be going to MoBay to work at Freezone. There is no where here to develop skills and provide work for the young people. Only roadside work the PNP give and that's it," said Stewart.

He said he is confident that the JLP will win the Savanna la Mar Division and bring about change to the town.
