The National Security Minister Robert Montague is warning that the police will soon be able to trace prank callers to the 119 emergency number and punish them.
He says of the 32,000 calls made daily to the 119 emergency number, 22,000 are made by people intent on creating mischief.
According to Mr Montague, the police are now awaiting the delivery of equipment and software to allow them to track 119 callers.
He said prank callers often clog the system, causing a delay in the response to persons with emergencies.
In the meantime, the National Security Minister is appealing to pranksters to stop abusing the system.
