Officials of the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) are to meet tomorrow with the mother of a three-year-old child who died while undergoing treatment at the May Pen hospital on January 6.

The meeting comes as the SRHA investigates the death of the child. A statement from the SRHA said the child was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of the hospital about 3:50 a.m. on the day with a complaint of vomiting.

According to SRHA, the child was examined by a nurse, followed by a doctor who determined that he was well enough to return home.

However, the mother returned with the child to the hospital about 9 p.m. the same day where he was re-assessed by a medical team that comprised a paediatrician and an anaesthesiologist. During the assessment, the SRHA said it was noticed that the child's condition was deteriorating rapidly and attempts were made to resuscitate him.

Those efforts failed and the child died.

The SRHA said it is now conducting an in-depth investigation into the death of the child.
