Footprints | Uriniah Elliot - Principled woman of God

Uriniah Elliot, Sister Uri, Bungo Niah, as she was affectionately called, was born on January 12, 1928, to Albertha Grey and Richard Cruckshank. She was the 15th child for her parents, all of whom have predeceased her.

Uriniah attended the Hampstead Elementary School in St Mary. Growing up, she was a tom boy. she enjoyed working with her brothers spraying bananas and mixing mortar. She also loved farming. However, her passion was not limited to outdoor activities. She was an excellent cook and baker. She would make grater cake, drops, and even guava jelly. Because of her love for the kitchen, she always had something to give to those who passed by her home. Sometimes she would send dinner or uncooked food to people in the community.

On September 28, 1947, Uriniah was baptised at the Hampstead Seventh-day Adventist Church. She had an undying love for God and His word. In 1953, she met Hubert Elliot. they got married and moved to Lewisburg, St Mary. shortly afterwards, Uriniah transferred her membership to the Lewisburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. There, she played several fundamental roles working as a Sabbath School teacher, Sabbath School superintendent, lay activity leader, elder, and choir member.

Outside of church, Uriniah continued her farming and served as the chairman of the school board at the Lewisburg All-Age School for a number of years.

Uriniah and her husband lived in Lewisburg for 57 years. Over time, her husband got sick and they were no longer able to manage in the country, so they moved to Kingston. While in Kingston, Hubert's illness worsened and he died in January 2007. Uriniah then transferred her membership to the Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jones Town.

Uriniah is remembered as a selfless person who thought nothing was too good to give away. She was always pleasant and wore a smile that exuded so much joy. She enjoyed telling stories and rhymes. her home was always filled with children. Uriniah was also a strict. no-nonsense individual. it was her way or the highway. The principles she instilled in her grandchildren and others while raising them in the country live on in a unique way.

She has run the race and is now resting in the arms of her Saviour. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
